I turned 21!

Began with a nice dinner at Spiral Diner, the best darn vegan restaurant in Fort Worth the world.
The best part of the night was spent at the Round Up Saloon, the best darn cowboy gay bar in Dallas, bar none.

I sang "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" as it had never been sung, and (from what I can remember of the performance, which came pretty late in the night) will hopefully never be sung again.

A huge image that everyone who reads this should look behind the cut to see. )

Quite an experience. In fact, a highlight of my life. Big thank you to everyone who shared it with me.

PS - My prayers have been answered! New Lauryn! It's just a single, from a children's movie. And it's not perfect, but still amazing. Fuck it. It's new Lauryn. Let's hope she doesn't wait another ten years to follow up. ...was that a Willie Nelson reference?

Blahhhhg!

http://www.progressivepatriotsfund.com/2008.html

Russ Feingold (one of a only a handful of senators to vote against the DOMA, the only senator to vote against the Patriot Act, co-creator of McCain-Feingold, the first senator to call for a firm withdrawal date in Iraq, the man introduced the censure resolution, and one of the top 2 fiscal discipline/anti-pork senators every year since 1998 according the Concord Coalition) has decided not to run for President in 2008.

I respect his reasons, but it makes me frown. So far every candidate seems to require a good deal of compromise on things I'd rather not compromise on. Edwards (and Obama, to a lesser extent) has excellent progressive rhetoric, but I'm far from sold he'll actually follow through.

Stress.

After this weekend things will be a bit more calm. And then, come 11/8, even better, I hope.

PR: WTF? Okay, going into this episode I reluctantly said it looked like Jeffery would win. Reluctant because he's a douche. The stuff they showed on the rack last episode was pretty good. Then, after the runway, I was like "Whoo! It's gonna be Uli!" Because her collection really came together and was just clearly the best. Whoo because she's nice. Then Jeffery won. Booooo. Also - Michael, why did you let me down so much? I supported you before it was trendy... and then you pooped out. Be good again!

Dear Mead folks,
Have you seen the commercial for NBA Live 07?

"FEATURING ADAM MORRISON!" Weird.

You should also read the wikipedia article about him. "Is an avid reader and, although he denies that he is a communist, says one of his idols is Che Guevara after a project in the 8th grade"

<3,
-nate.

P.S. Why THE FUCK isn't Project Runway on tonight?

Ann

"After listening to George Bush all these years, I figured you needed to know what a real Texas accent sounds like." - Ann Richards, 1988

Now more than ever, Ann. Now more than ever. You're the kind of Texas that made me want to move to Texas. One tough grandma, indeed.

Subject:Kinky on Immigration

My friend Lauren, a smart young woman who for some reason supports Chris Bell for Texas governor, wrote this on my Facebook wall:
Here we go again... 'He said he supports groups such as the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps because they draw attention to problems on the border. Asked about his own strategy for securing the border, Friedman said, "I'm not sure. I don't have a plan." He said he would appoint people who care about the state to develop a plan based on his motto: "Remember the Alamo."' That's about as much evidence as I need to understand that Kinky Friedman is a Republican. "
My response was too hott (okay, just too long) for Facebook so I put it up here. Enjoy:
His rhetorical framing has shifted and that's is pissing me off too. But let's look at the policy he just rolled out and, oh, I don't know... Chris Bell.

KINKY: "His plans for illegal immigration include increasing the number of Texas National Guard troops on the border (from the current 1,500 to 10,000)..."
BELL: Securing our Border: The very first priority in addressing illegal immigration needs to be securing our border. The simple truth is that federal government has failed in this mission, and Rick Perry has been far less aggressive then other border governors in meeting this challenge. It’s time for Texas to step up and restore order on the border. That’s why Chris Bell supports the deployment of the National Guard to the border.

KINKY: "...imposing $25,000 and $50,000 fines on companies that hire illegal immigrants..."
BELL: "Cracking Down on Illegal Hiring: There are already federal laws on the books that make it illegal for business to knowingly hire undocumented workers"

KINKY: "...and requiring foreign nationals seeking employment to purchase a foreign taxpayer ID card once they have passed a criminal background check."
BELL: "Real Immigration Reform: Securing the border needs to be a top priority, but we can’t talk about border security without having a meaningful discussion about immigration reform. Common sense says we need to reject policies that drive immigrants even further underground, while also rejecting policies that provide further incentives to enter the country illegally. Amnesty is not the answer. Giving blanket amnesty would undermine our efforts to secure the border and discriminate against immigrants who come to country legally. At the same time, our goal is to know as much as possible about who is crossing our borders, which is why we need to avoid policies that will drive undocumented immigrants even further underground."

Look, I think every candidate in this race right now is further to the right then all reasonable people on this issue. I think the smartest person is... Kinky five months ago. Read this: “I’ve been urging action on the border for over a year,” Friedman said. “I’m pleased that Congress is finally debating an issue I’ve been talking about since I announced my candidacy – the re-introduction of a guest worker program that allows immigrants to legally enter our country and seek opportunities. I hope this puts an end to the countless lives that have been lost on the backs of cargo container trucks on U.S. soil at the hands of coyotes who take advantage of those seeking a better life.” Kinky believes that the U.S. Senate is on the right track--with a plan that includes limited amnesty for hard-working illegal immigrants already in this country, a work program ending in citizenship for aspiring immigrants, and increased border security measures to combat the spread of drugs and terrorism. He also promised to meet with the Democratic governors of Arizona and New Mexico to work on joint solutions to the unique problems border states face--something the current governor, a Republican, has never done.

I don't think Kinky has flip flopped, but he has shifted focus and now is as far right as that evil man Chris Bell. I hope he gets back on track on this issue, but he's still trouncing Bell on everything else I care about.

George Bush don’t like blacks? no shit, sherlock
and his daddy’s CIA flooded the hood with rocks
and his momma said the woman oughta feel at home
getting raped in the bathroom in the Superdome
the comment Kanye made was damn near right
but Bush hate poor people be it black or white

That song is out of control. You should listen to it. The dude says some smart shit. Even though, for the record, I am generally pro-Oprah.

Snakes (the first time I typed Snacks) on a Plane and Little Miss Sunshine are also worth your money.

Good shit is happening all around me but I feel worse and worse every day. Don't freak out. Nothing serious. Just in an extended funk.

I love horror movies. I watch them often, and I'm easily scared. And The Descent is one of the best and scariest I can remember seeing. Not just "Boo!" scary or "Ew!" scary. There's plenty of that, but what makes it awesome is all the good, old fashioned dread. The equally old school "who are the real monsters?" moral dilemmas are icing on the cake.

Go see it!

Subject:I am a part of history
Time:05:39 pm
I was reading an article in the New Yorker about Wikipedia, and it said it went up 1/15/01. I was like "Wait a minute..." did a quick google search of some old user names of mine and found out I was editing Wikipedia when it was a wee six months old. I only remember making a few minor revisions, but the history on the few pages I thought I might have worked on didn't go back that far.

I was only 15, my userpage said so, and that earned me a comment from Larry Sanger, Wikipedia's second employee, saying "Frankly, Nate, if you're 15, and having seen your edits, you should probably wait a few years before helping out."

A user name KoyaanisQatsi rushed to my defense, saying "Larry, perhaps I'm missing something but I can't see how Nate's edits are so different from many others I've seen made, without complaint or comment. If Nate is making edits you're unhappy with you might try to think of a more constructive criticism; certainly at 15 Nate is capable of understanding and following them if he wishes to."

That prompted Larry to tone his original comment down to "Hi Nate. If you want to help out here, please try to give us your absolute best work. I think it is possible that a 15-year-old might be able to make a positive contribution, but only if he or she is an extremely good student and writes very carefully, and probably only about stuff that he or she has studied ''a lot.''" Then, that still apparently seeming too harsh, he settle for "Hi Nate. If you want to help out here, please try to give us your absolute best work. Most of us here have college degrees and we're trying to do at least college-level work."

Ha ha ha. So precocious, I was. But a part of history!
